A few days ago Roadfood Digest noted that the famed bagels of Montreal are now available in the Boston area. We learned, via a Montreal Gazette story, of one other place where these chewy discs of bread are available. All you have to do is hitch a ride on the shuttle Discovery and get off at the nearest International Space Station.
It seems NASA allows their astronauts to bring a small supply of their food favorites aboard the station, and astronaut Greg Chamitoff recently brought 18 sesame bagels from Montreal's Fairmount Bagel with him (see Michael Stern's Roadfood.com review of St. Viateur, in which he gives a favorable mention to Fairmount). He was born in Montreal, and his aunt owns the bakery. Says aunt Mona, "His favourite is the garlic bagel, but I didn't dare send garlic bagels - they would have stunk up the whole place."
If you are planning a trip to the station for bagels, try to arrive soon. We wouldn't expect 18 bagels to last long.
