Los Angeles Taco Truck Dilemma

Taqueria La Cha Cha MS

The New York Times writes about the tension between the Los Angeles taco trucks and the local Mexican restaurants.  The trucks have been operating illegally (but rarely enforced) for the past several years by parking in areas for longer than the allotted 30 or 60 minutes.  Residents have grown to love the convenient and cheap eats, yet, local restaurateurs have found it difficult to compete with these mobile meals-on-wheels.  Read more about it here:

As the L.A. Times put it in an editorial on May 2: "If providing cheap, tasty food that puts competitors out of business were a crime, the late McDonald's mogul Ray Kroc would have died in prison."

Not being a lover of McDonald's, I disagree with the word "tasty" in that sentence. But other than that...

I've been going to taco trucks and push cart vendors for years. Most of them operate away from restaurants anyhow. Or they operate at night when nearby restaurants are closed. They are an essential part of their communities.

On taco truck night, a couple of friends and I managed to eat at seven different locations. There are some good recommendations in my blog about it: http://www.ericstone.com/blog.html

We are all up in arms about this in Los Angeles! Check out local communal blogs for more information.

And now they are even after our beloved bacon dogs.

What is this city coming to???
