New England Ice Cream 032

Located just up the road from the Clam Box of Ipswich, White Farms is a classic New England ice cream stand with a cow on the roof that has been serving up scoops for over a half-century. Fans of brain freezes are in luck, as White Farms serves up hefty scoops of light, airy ice cream that can be eaten in much greater quantities than its heavy, butter-fat laden counterparts. A new 1,000-foot addition was built onto the original structure in spring of 2008, bringing with it the North End pizza franchise, Sal's.

Our recommendation - White Farms serves ice cream that doesn't meet the standard of a New England creamery.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Maple Walnut Ice Cream - Lots of nuts, but the maple taste peters out quickly.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream - Little chocolate taste and few peanut butter cups.
Cow Trax Ice Cream - Vanilla ice cream with an abundance of peanut butter cups, which overwhelm the actual ice cream. The texture of the ice cream was crumbly like fresh butter.
Vanilla Ice Cream - Another icy vanilla flavor that begs for toppings.
Hot Fudge Sauce - This thin sauce was virtually tasteless and had a strange caramel color. A hot fudge that actually outshone the vanilla ice cream.

I'm a little surprised by the poor rating of White Farms. I stopped in last summer and was quite happy with my scoop of frozen pudding.

BB, our ratings are all in comparison to each other. White Farms didn't stack up to the others very well (plus we'd just eaten at Herrel's, Toscanini's, and Christina's to boot!), but that wasn't stopping the crowd of people there. In fact, we really liked the pizza at Sal's in the adjoining building, even though it was our default dinner after finding the line at the Clam Box stretched out (sigh) to the street!

I'll tell you, one of the things we've noticed over the last few years is how we are appreciating lighter, airier ice creams more and more. Which is the White Farms style. Just seems homier and comfy. Of course, it also has to be well-made, and your experience with White Farms' flavors sounds pretty disappointing. We'll have to go back and see.

Our experience with the much-heralded Amy's in Austin is a good contrast. It just tasted oily and sludgy to us.

HI Guys,
My name is Rob Bouley and I am the owner over at White Farms, I just wanted to let you know that I was dissappointed in the review that we got from your visit. I make all of the ice cream over at White Farms myself and I use only the best quality ingrediants that I can get. I do not pump any air into our ice cream at all.
I have been making ice cream for over 20 years now and have always made it the same. I would like to thank you for coming and visiting us but I have to say that over the years we have received great reviews and I have changed nothing to the quality of our ice cream. We were voted as one of the top 25 in New England by Boston Magazine and just received the silver only behind Richardson's in the North Shore, not to mention being featured on Fox News and The Food Network. I am sorry that you guys did not love our ice cream like so many other people do, but this will only make me strive harder to make a great frozen desert. I just wanted to let all of our fans know that our great ice cream is still being made the same way by the same person.
Thanks again for your review
Rob

Cherry Hill Creamery is by far the best on the North Shore Smile

White's is the best the cherry vanilla is awesome, you must go again and try the key lime pie you won't be disappointed. I just wish they stayed open all year.
