New England Ice Cream 108

If your trips to Maine have rarely veered off of the I-95 artery, you have likely missed Shaw’s Ridge Farm, a small family-owned shop in Sanford. The Shaw family has been producing top-quality products for over 70 years and has clearly perfected the art of ice cream making. In addition to satisfying your sweet tooth, Shaw’s Ridge also boasts an adjoining bakery and BBQ barn for a full-meal experience.

Please visit http://www.RoadfoodDigest.com/IceCream for a complete listing of reviews in the New England Ice Cream series.

Our recommendation - Shaw's Ridge Farm serves world class ice cream.  Stop what you are doing and plan a trip right now.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Grammy Shaw's Coffee Ice Cream - A strong, pleasant coffee flavor. A coffee ice cream for coffee drinkers!
Indian Pudding - The strong molasses flavor was elevated by the grainy cornmeal throughout.
Vanilla Ice Cream - A rich and creamy old-fashioned classic.
Hot Fudge Sauce - Thin, smooth, and slightly bitter, you could feel the warmth of the fudge as you wrapped your hand around the cup. Potentially one of the greatest hot fudge sauces in the country!

Having sampled the best ice cream throughout New England, Ohio, Wisconsin, France, Italy, New Zealand and beyond, I can say without any hesitation that the flavors we were served is some of the finest anywhere in the world.

So is the dark flavor in the first picture the Grammy Shaw's coffee or the Indian Pudding?

I want to say that the top flavor is Indian Pudding, but I could be wrong. This was one stop where we literally had to hold ourselves back from taking too many spoonfuls (in light of the fact that we had a handful of stops left in the day). I can't wait for a return visit!

Nancy, that's the Indian Pudding -- and it was just as molasses-y and texture-laden as it looks. I completely agree with Stephen that this is among the top shops anywhere, and I hope to beat him back up to Maine to sample more ice cream and their BBQ, which they began serving over Memorial Day...exactly one week before our visit! (sigh)

I can totally imagine at this point that your ice cream memories have to be blurring. You guys hang in there! We believe in your frozen mouths!

Don't forget another great ice cream shop in Sanford - Shain's of Maine. Their ginger ice cream is fantastic (so is their peach yogurt)!

Shaw's Ridge Farm Native Maine Strawberry is the best ice cream that I have ever tasted, bar none. Hand picked berries from a farm just a few miles down the road, it has the perfect balance of both fruit and sweetness. It truly is world class.

My family is from Limerick, about 20 plus miles from Sanford. I am 65 years old and my grandfather used to take me to Shaw's Ridge for ice cream as a child. Orange Pineapple or coffee were and are the best ever. Wish I had some right now.
