New England Ice Cream 008

Over the past quarter century, Herrell's has tripled in size from a single store in Northhampton to include shops in Allston and Cambridge as well. This is the birthplace of the ice cream smoosh-in, where Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, fruits, nuts or other mix-ins found their way into creamy base flavors long before the emergence of Cold Stones and Marble Slabs. This type of innovation remains today, as Herrell's rotates through nearly 200 different flavors. Whereas some of these flavors were first concocted over 30 years ago (like Malted Vanilla and Chocolate Pudding), new and different flavors emerge all the time (such as a frosty Root Beer)!

Please visit http://www.RoadfoodDigest.com/IceCream for a complete listing of reviews in the New England Ice Cream series.

Our recommendation - Herrell's serves world class ice cream.  Stop what you are doing and plan a trip right now.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Chocolate Pudding Ice Cream - This flavor will take you back to your childhood. Just like a creamy Fudgesicle, except with a bolder and more mature taste.
Mud Pie Ice Cream - Espresso ice cream with Hydrox cookies and hot fudge, the balance between the coffee flavor and crunchy cookies was spot on.
Malted Vanilla Ice Cream - Creamy, smooth, and just like a melted vanilla malt!
Vanilla Ice Cream - Speckled with vanilla beans, this vanilla flavor was bold.
Hot Fudge Sauce - Not too bitter, but very flavorful. A homemade sauce worthy of standing on its own.

My husband's dad owned and ran a pharmacy at the location of the one on the corner of comm ave and harvard ave in allston in the 60's before he died. This looks like a different one tho.beth

Beth, before this I'd only been to the store in Northampton, and I'll never, ever forget what I tried there: Twinkie ice cream -- tasted exactly like a Twinkie!

Why is the fudge comment identical to Rancatore's? Were they that similar? (I don't think they are at all... just MHO.)

Thanks Ceci-that was just a slip. Herrell's definitely has a much thicker sauce than Ranc's!

Odd. In my experience it is EXACTLY the opposite. Ranc's is way waaayyyyy thicker. Oh well. You must've hit them on an off day. Such is life.

I lived in Western MA for about 15 years and miss Herrell's badly! I was back for a wedding last weekend. Between the ceremony and reception, we stopped in for a fix. My all-time fave was on the menu - Earl Grey Tea. As coffee ice cream is to a steaming cup, so is Earl Grey to a hot cuppa. Creamy, delicate and delicious. Steve Herrell was in the store but we missed a chance to talk to him. Steve, if you're reading - thanks for lots of happy times!

Stephen,

I think Herrell's is on the corner of Harvard and Brighton Ave. At least it was when I was living in Boston. Have they moved? I know Pizzeria Uno's, Great Scott (a bar), Boston Market, and a liquor store (Marty's?) were on those four corners back in 2003.

Does the shop in Northhampton have the same quality ice cream?

Just a correction - Herrell's namesake is Steve Herrell the original found of the legendary Steve's Ice Cream in Somerville and the mix-in inventor.

After much success with Steves he sold off the name and the concept and Steves Ice Cream concept was short lived do to porr quality.

He then opended Herrells and has been turning out amazing ice cream ever since.

Yes, the Allston location was the once-upon-a-time home to Donovan's Drugstore on the corner of Harvard and Brighton Aves. Hope this helps answer Beth.
