Ice Cream Stop #16 - Brown's Ice Cream, York Beach, ME

Posted by Stephen Rushmore , May 28, 2008 08:25

New England Ice Cream 117b

Located a mile or two from the bustling York Beach boardwalk, Brown’s sits on a rocky outcropping that is bounded by a few of the area’s priciest seaside manors. With fresh fruit and other ingredients, this humble stand churns out ultra-premium confections that match the grandeur of the surrounding views of the shore. From the gravel parking lot, take the stairs down to the stand, or hop down the massive boulder that serves as Brown’s “natural” seating area.

Our recommendation - We would travel across state lines to experience Brown's Ice Cream.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Black Raspberry Ice Cream - Delightfully gummy texture and just the right amount of flavor to make for a perfect scoop.
Blueberry Ice Cream - Jam-packed with seemingly berries and boasting a natural blueberry taste, this was an exemplar in the fruit ice cream category.
Vanilla Ice Cream - Given the strength of Brown's other flavors, this vanilla fell disappointingly flat. In the world of yogurt, this would be more of a plain than a vanilla flavor.
Hot Fudge Sauce - Likely the same hot fudge served up in many other local ice creameries, this thick, overly sweet concoction didn't excite taste buds.

Regarding Maine's blueberry history, this blueberry ice cream was phenomenal.  Curiously, I don't believe that Brown's used Maine wild berries (at least they didn't advertise this like other shops did), instead opting for the usual, larger variety.  I'd love to try this flavor at the height of blueberry season!

I was just @ Brown's and it was great as always.  I usually get Indian Pudding, which I would recommend to anyone wanting to try a new flavor.  It is very good and kind of a hard flavor to describe.  It contains cornmeal, molasses, and nutmeg.  Along with some other ingredients.  I believe Shane's of Maine actually makes it.  Just by reading the reviews I would like to try the blueberry ice cream, it sounds very refreshing.

As a summertime resident of York, and a former employee of Brown's (two summers!) I must say you missed out on their BEST flavor...their cookie dough icecream is so loaded w/ cookie dough it will barely balance on a cone.  Delicious!

The rating for black raspberry and blueberry is five cones here...but four cones on the "Flavors of New England" page. Which is correct?

It should be 4 cones.  Good catch!

As a long-time fan (as a kid 30 years ago, anyway), I recall they did a good job with New England standards such as ginger, grapenuts, etc.

I dream about this ice cream all winter.  It is truly the best I've ever had.  I second the vote for the Indian Pudding, simply delicious!
