Ice Cream Stop #9 - Tubby's, Wayne, ME

Posted by Stephen Rushmore , May 26, 2008 22:22

New England Ice Cream 071

Located on a quiet stretch of Route 133 next to the Wayne Post Office, Tubby’s has been churning out the some of Maine’s best ice cream since 2001. In addition to a full menu of burgers, lobstah rolls, and phenomenal hot dogs (with grilled, buttered buns in true New England style), Tubby’s boasts unique ice cream flavors with high-end ingredients that belie this humble shop. Although a few benches are available by the order counter, regulars are more likely to be found sitting out back by the lake.

Our recommendation - Tubby's serves world class ice cream.  Stop what you are doing and plan a trip right now.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Cinnamon Trail Ice Cream - Cinnamon ice cream studded with raisins, cranberries, coconut, M+Ms, and chocolate chips with no one ingredient hogging the spotlight.
Tree Hugger Ice Cream - Just like your the topping on your mom's apple crumble, the smooth texture of the maple ice cream was pleasantly interrupted by rolled oats.
Vanilla Ice Cream - Smooth and rich without being overly sweet.
Hot Fudge Sauce - Thin, bitter European-style chocolate sauce with overtones of genuine cocoa.

Friends, we are serious when we say "drop everything and go": Tubby's Treehugger ice cream is in my Top 5 of my entire life!  Amy & I'll be visiting soon for a formal review.

Chris, what is 'Naked' I Screameth?

Nancy, we didn't know what Naked, I Screameth was until we tried a taster cone on a visit last week. The only way of describing it is like plain ice cream (I think the woman at the counter described it as a sugar and cream flavor). It has the texture of ice cream, but is almost devoid of flavor. I'm assuming it's ordered most often as a base for some of their fabulous homemade hot fudge or butterscotch sauce!

I was able to zoom in on the photo, and "Naked" I Screameth is "Lo, light creamth and yonder sugar finely clothed in a Birthday Suit. - Shakesphere"

Tubby's is pet-friendly...bring your dog and he gets a free doggie cone.  Also, Tubby's homemade hand cream is as heavenly as his ice cream. It's a favorite summertime stopping place for our whole family!

Tubby's is a first class ice cream shop. Their ice cream is homemade from scratch using the best natural ingredients. All of their toppings including the hot fudge (best ever), caramel, and fruit toppings are made right there. The homemade brownie hot fudge sundae is awesome. They offer samples of all the many flavors. Not only do they have the most unbeleivable ice cream, but they have great food. The lobster rolls, and foot long hot dogs are the best you will find anywhere. There is always a lot of people there when we go, but the line moves quickly. The place always very clean, and is beautifully situated on a quiet pond, with nice patio seating overlooking the water. You can also take a nice stroll over the footbridge at the village dam and waterfall. The place is always very clean, and the staff is the most pleasant I have found any where. It is no surprise to me why they were chosen to be the best of New England over all the others. A trip to Tubby's is worth the time and effort. You won't be dissapointed.

If you love grape-nut ice cream, Tubby's is the BEST!!!
Hands down. Old Fashioned Quality at a remarkable price in comparison to what you might pay in the old-port or along the coast.
