Ice Cream Stop #5 - Sundae School, Dennisport, MA

Posted by Stephen Rushmore , May 22, 2008 13:58

New England Ice Cream 034

Although there are now three locations on the Cape, 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of the Dennisport store. Step up to the marble soda fountain counter to order a frappe, ice cream soda, or sundae served in an old-fashioned glass dish. The ambience inside the historic barn serves to enhance the ice cream experience, from the antique signs on the walls to the pennants (of colleges attended by current and former scoopers) carpeting the rafters. Although the ice cream is made daily in small batches, this luckily does not translate into a lack of flavor choices. Both ice cream purists and mix-in junkies will each be pleased by the quality of the flavors as well as the presence of candies, nuts, or fruits in every spoonful.

Our recommendation - Sundae School serves world class ice cream.  Stop what you are doing and plan a trip right now.

Trip Report Card
Overall Experience

Bass River Mud Ice Cream (coffee ice cream with a fudge swirl, chocolate chips, and almonds) - This mud pie-type flavor has certainly been done before, but few versions can rival the success achieved at Sundae School. The combination of a solid coffee flavor and abundant mix-ins made for a perfect pick.
Pirate Pandemonium Ice Cream - A flavor sensation! The peanut butter ice cream would have been a solid stand-alone, but the crunch and salt of the pretzels truly enhanced the scoop.
Vanilla Ice Cream - Fantastic flavor and incredibly smooth texture.
Hot Fudge Sauce - Incredibly thick and cleaved like butter.

I actually had a yound waitress here in Pittsburgh tell me about this place a few years ago.  Her family vacations on the Cape and she said it was the best ice cream she has ever had.  I had forgotten about it until reading this.  Sounds like she knew what she was talking about.  I can't wait to try it myself someday!

We're in Orleans and so always go to the Sundae School there. Sublime! In fact, that's the very first stop visiting grandchildren make when they visit during the summer. After reading the review of the Dennisport Sundae School, I thought it might be fun for the grandkids to try it out. But given the current gas prices, we've made the decision to do no unnecessary driving this summer.

I make a beeline to the East Orleans Sundae School each time we visit the area. My favorite, often, but not always available, is Ginger ice cream [with candied ginger chunks], hot fudge sundae ... no whipped cream or marshmallow, and only a bing cherry on top. The thick, decadent whipped cream is great on the fresh blueberry or raspberry sundaes made with coconut ice cream. The marshmallow topping is perfect on the mocha chip.

My mouth drools just thinking about it. It's worth the long lines and limited outdoor seating. In fact, I feel like booking a flight from home in Florida to East Orleans just to have some.

I grew up spending summers at my grandparents' cottage in Dennisport, just blocks from both the original and current locations of Sundae School. We would often walk there in the evenings, sometimes several times in a week. Very, very fond memories of super ice cream and a warm and wonderful community of ice cream makers and scoopers. So happy to see from a distance that it still looks exactly the same!!! Hope to get my own kids back there someday for ice cream in the evenings.

i don't even know where to start. the whipped cream that could be a dessert all on its own? the coffee oreo? the black raspberry? the....nope, i still don't know where to start. our decision to move to iowa was a good one...except that we're further from sundae school.
