Although locations now spill out beyond the Massachusetts border, this super premium ice creamery started out in a Boston basement in 1975. Regardless of the location, however, all Emack & Bolio's stores boast "exotic and original outrageous flavors" made using top-quality ingredients. The Cape Cod store in Orleans is a quaint, two-story house with a porch for al fresco eating.
Our recommendation - We would drive across state lines to experience Emack & Bolio's.

We had to ask about the E-Mack Attack, for those who spied it on the menu: it's 20 scoops with all toppings in a huge mixing bowl! There were a few photos in the shop of patrons holding this bowl and smiling...but no "after" shots of the same patrons after ingesting that much ice cream!

I have to respectfully disagree. We had an Emack & Bolio's in Stamford, CT and the ice cream was absolutely mediocre. The shop was in a busy area but it only lasted for about a year before it closed.

You must! must! must! visit the best ice cream place in the world, in the most unlikely of places: Handles Ice Cream in Youngstown, Ohio. And you must go to the original location at 3931 Handel's Court. It's open year-round and even if you visit on the coldest day of the year in January you will not be the only one in line. Try a seemingly odd but oh-so-heavenly offbeat flavor like grape or peppermint stick. The best. Hands down.

Betty, the next ice cream adventure will be in Ohio. We shall see how it compares...

Oh, that's great news! You will not regret Handles. The only thing I regret is that just across the parking lot from Handles was one of the best used bookstores ever. But, sigh, the bookstore closed a few years ago. Still, I look forward to your report on the ice cream!

If your next ice cream adventure really is in Ohio, you will, of course, need to sample the black raspberry chip at Graeter's.

If you're in Orleans, head immediately to Sundae School either to or from Nauset Beach. Don't bother with Emack and Bolio's, a pale second.

There is NO other! ...and nothing better!!! We have selected Emack's over all other ice cream choices for the 28 years that we have vacationed at Cape Cod. It is the best because it is consistently creamy, consistently high quaility (no ice crystals ever), generous chunks of chochlate, fruit, etc. The flavors offer both old favorites such as Oreo and new seasonal flavors such as Pistasio and Key Lime. My husband makes maple syrup and says there is nothing better than Emack's Maple Walnut. Those who feel that they suffer by limiting themselves to low fat or sugar free...fret no more. The dietary selections for people with heart problems, diabetes, or for those just watching their weight are SUPREME. The staff is wonderful, lively and caring. Ask Carol about the history of the beautiful Victorian house! ENJOY.
