The Quest for the Best Ice Cream in New England

Posted by Stephen Rushmore , May 19, 2008 22:02

Untitled

Nothing can better capture the spirit of a small New England town than visiting its seasonal ice creamery on a warm summer evening.

RoadfoodDigest.com New England residents Chris, Amy and I have frequented many ice cream stands and read many articles claiming to find the best, but were never content with reading about other people’s experiences – we had to find out for ourselves! Our goal is to taste our way throughout New England on a comprehensive journey to find the very best ice cream and hot fudge sauce. To make things even more exciting, we are doing this over two weekends so all the tasting notes and experiences remain fresh in our taste buds. To our knowledge, nobody has ever visited and rated 50 New England ice creameries, and certainly not in such a short period of time.

Over the next several weeks, we will be posting detailed results of our findings, the sugar highs, crashing lows, and tales of our journey. We are having an incredibly fun time logging thousands of miles over two weekends to find, in our opinion, the very, very best of New England’s creameries.

The Short List

There are literally thousands of ice cream shops in New England, so we had to narrow our short-list using certain criteria that will assist us to focus on the very best. Therefore, we only went to ice creameries that processed their own ice cream and were not a national chain (sorry Ben & Jerry’s!) Additionally, we only included hand-scooped hard ice cream, which means gelato, soft-serve, custards and other varieties were omitted. We then made the final selection based on recommendations, personal experiences, and mining through hundreds of blogs and articles.

The Ordering

Vanilla ice cream is our country’s most ordered flavor, so we decided to sample one scoop of vanilla topped with hot fudge sauce at every place we visited. We also sample tasted several flavors at each stop before deciding on at least two more scoops of a specialty item. These varied from town to town, and ranged from Moose Tracks to Lobster (more on that one later!)

The Rating

The ice cream, fudge, and overall experience was rated on a scale from 1-5. The following is how we defined each value:

  • One - The lowest rating and is an ice cream shop we don’t recommend if you’re yearning for a true New England ice cream experience.
  • Two - Ice cream and fudge worth eating if you happen to be in the area. Since we are rating the very best, a score of “two” is actually quite good and would qualify for a listing on Roadfood.com.
  • Three - Ice cream and fudge worth traveling across several towns to eat. A very memorable experience despite a few minor flaws.
  • Four - Ice cream and fudge worth traveling across state lines to experience. Everything is fully satisfying and the entire experience is distinct and nearly flawless.
  • Five - Epic ice cream and fudge. World class, highly memorable, and only reserved for the very, very best. The kind of ice cream we could lick a bowl clean even if we started on a full stomach. Only a select few of our 50 rated places might meet these criteria.

Stay tuned over the next several weeks as we share our delicious discoveries, and be sure to visit http://www.RoadfoodDigest.com/IceCream for our itinerary.

Stephen,

Please cosider including IL Bacio on Germantown Rd. in Danbury CT on the ice cream tour. As an addict, I think their ice creams are possibly the best I've ever tasted anywhere. The chocolate called cardiac arrest is an unbelievably rich combination of three chocolates.

What a great mission! Remember - it's all about fat content, and Shady Glen on East Middle Turnpike in Manchester, CT, has got it, baby! It's the real deal. If it was fall, I'd recommend the seasonal pumpkin ice cream - an absolute dream - but vanilla with the piping hot fudge sauce and a cherry on top will do just fine. And when summer comes 'round, I can't help but order some good ole peppermint stick to bring back memories of youth. And the authentic-retro decor, service and atmosphere just add to the fun!!!

Ice Cream! Yes!!

I have also spent a (wonderful) lifetime sampling local homemade ice creams. I agree (almost entirely) with your "All-Star" list, having sampled the majority of your choices in Eastern Mass. & RI. DO NOT give out your highest rating until you visit the Ice Cream Machine in Cumberland, RI *smile*. If I could only have one ice cream stand to visit for the rest of my life...

There are a number of very good ice cream stands in eastern Mass. which did not make your list, which is understandable - the mind might be willing, but the flesh can only eat so much... I certainly have NO quibbles with any of your choices which I have also visited in the past. BUT...there is one GLARING omission from your list! Probably because it's only been open a few years, and is 'off the beaten track' in a not frequently visited part of town, but...

I suspect part of the fun in your ice cream quest will be sampling a few of the other ice cream stands which people will recommend for you. This 'new' stand is in my humble opinion a close 2nd to Ice Cream Machine, and is eminently visitable when you are in our neck of the woods. It is Flint Farm, at 789 East St., Mansfield, Ma. I think you will find it FAR superior to Crescent Ridge and Bubbling Brook, both of which are nearby. I'm hopeful you will find time to visit it, and I'm looking forward to ALL the results of your trek!

Happy Licking! And don't forget to pack extra napkins - those flimsy little things they seem to have at all the ice cream stands are cute, but not nearly sufficient to do the job on a hot summer's day.

Kimballs Farm in Westford MA
not just super ice cream but adventure golf

A definite consideration has to be Brickley's in Narragansett, RI.  This is a place that people go to after the beach, after baseball games, and just because.  The people work hard there and they provide some of the best ice cream I have ever had.

Please add the Sundae School in West Dennis, MA (Cape Cod)to your short list. We have sampled the ice cream fare on the Cape for over 20 years and found their products to be the most consistent, flavorful and creative without being silly. The hot fudge remains thick and not too sugary, with a strong but not bitter chocolate essence.

The Hyannis/Osterville crowd will likely will rave over Four Seas, but our experience suggests that Sundae School remains the favorite.

Wenworth's on Route 10 in Hamden, CT is da' bomb.  I don't know if they still make it, but their peach ice cream... *swoon*.  My all-time favorite is their Pralines & Cream ice cream with some M&M's.

If you're including Gelato, I strongly urge you to go to Mozzicato's on Franklin Avenue in Hartford.

I have been a ice cream fiend most of my life and love your list, though you understandably have missed a newcomer. I grew up in Bethel, CT and have been a Dr. Mikes bigot for most of life, but there is a new kid in town!

Ferris Acres Creamery, Route 302 in Newtown, has started making iceream out of milk from their own dairy farm in the last couple years, and it is aweome. It is so tasty and rich, I feel younger just thinking about it!

After you hit Dr. Mikes, continue on Greenwood Ave, towards Newtown, you will find it just past the Sugar Hill Service Center. You get to watch the cows while you eat your ice cream, too!

Holy cow kids--pun intended--that's a huge list.  Heck of a time to develop lactose intolerance.  I will be praying for your arteries to withstand the strain.

Another place you may want to consider is Mainely Custard (formerly Classic Custard) in South Freeport, Maine on US 1 just north of Yarmouth.......They make their own and have some great off the wall flavors.

Dennis is absolutely right... Shady Glen on East Middle Turnpike in Manchester Connecticut should definitely be on your list.

In the summer, their fresh peach and fresh blueberry ice creams are a "must have"

Don't forget Benson's in West Boxford, MA.  Their berry flavors use local blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. Amazing fresh fruity goodness!

What a great idea !!!!!

When you go to Richardson's in Middleton, MA, you'll be very  close to the best ice cream I've ever had, but the very best is at at a place called Hodgies' in Amesbury (and Salisbury Beach.)Amesbury is the original and my favorite, but Salisbury does have the beach...hmmmm....

Hodgies' is a family run place that serves homemade ice cream that is that thick creamy kind that leaves a residue of taste in your mouth, too delish for words. The gentleman who started it was a teacher at Amesbury High and employed lots of high school students including my niece in her day. They might as well have been family members. He treated all those kids very well.

Their grapenut pudding ice cream and their rum raisin are my particular favorites but my huibby would tell you to have anything chocalate. The night before we moved from Newburyport Ma to Dallas TX, we had a family goodbye ceremony at Hodgies and the four of us shared a  "Hodgies Special" That is about 20 or mors scoops  of ice cream(and you get to choose how many flavors) in a huge pail, with 3 (or 4 maybe)toppings and mounds of homemade whipped cream. I'm drooling on the keyoard in memory. I dare you and Amy to try and finish one!!!!!

What am enjoyable endeavor, I am envious!!!

You should definitely check out Inside Scoop in Wickford, RI.  The ice cream is homemade and the crowds line up out the door when the weather is nice.  I recently moved to Texas (its 90 here today) and I'm certainly jealous when friends and family call me and say they went to Inside Scoop.  But hey, I've got better BBQ.

In the Portland ME area, there is also Beal's (there are 6 of them).  We think they are the best--as good or better than Gray's (Tiverton, RI).  It is an extremely popular family-owned company with many interesting local flavors.  Our favorite location is on Veranda St. in Portland. I'm surprised this did not make it onto your list--definitely your loss!

The best ice cream I've ever eaten is at the Round Top creamery in Damiscotta Maine. You can look out the windows at the cows that provide the milk for the ice cream you eating at this family run dairy/ice cream store. My favorite is the  ginger.
My only criticism - they don't ship!

A tremendous undertaking. I am sure you enjoyed it immensely and I can't wait to read about this!

It would be easy to pick out certain favorite places and say, "What about X?" I won't do that. I will however ask about the geography of your selections. There seems to be a huge bias towards the I-95 corridor. The majority of the locations are within 20 miles of 95. This is most apparent in Connecticut. Also, there are no places in Vermont. I understand that travel logistics played a part in this. Hopefully, you mention how you arrived at the Top 50.

In any event, this must've been a lot of fun and I'm envious. A great idea.

You may be interested in checking out Dorman's ice cream in Thomaston ME and Shain's of Maine.

Though you are basing this on vanilla ice cream, you should try Shain's ginger ice cream and their rhum raisin.

Enjoy! I look forward to the results

A BIG thanks to everyone for their tips and suggestions! Some of the places that have been suggested are on our expanded list (you'll notice the posted list is not quite 50), and some will definitely move to the top of our lists for future exploration. The state that surprisingly yielded few nominees after much research was Vermont. Perhaps Ben and Jerry's just has a monopoly on the state, or maybe Vermonters just don't want to share their secrets with the rest of the world! Either way, if anyone has any northern NE suggestions to share, they would be warmly welcomed.

Thanks again for all of your feedback and help--please keep it coming! And stay tuned for the first chapter in our dairy-intensive adventures!

Perhaps too late for this round, but Sweet Claude's Ice Cream Parlor in Cheshire, CT is worth a visit.  The location is on Rt 10, almost directly opposite the intersection with Rt 42.  It would be an easy next stop after Big Dipper in Prospect.  The simplest route would be 69 south to 42, 42 east to 10, and you are there.  And if you were to include Wentworth's you could just continue south on 10.

Have fun!

This is just an incredibly ambitious task.  And considering ice cream is my favorite food, I am incredibly jealous!  I can't wait to see what you guys found.

A shame they seem to be missing so much of Central New Hampshire.  The Puritan Restaurant (245 Hooksett Rd Manchester 03104) is mainly a sit-down eatery but they make their own wonderful ice creams.  Best flavors IMO: Rum Raisin (one of the best I've ever tasted) Mocha Swirl, Baklava (with huge chunks of real baklava) and Grape Nut.

Arnie's drive-in (164 Loudon Rd, Concord NH 03301) has very good ice cream made on-site.

In the Lakes Region, Kellerhaus (Rt.3 Weirs Beach/Laconia NH) is worth a visit.

We take our grandchildren to the Dipsy Doodle Dairy Bar in Northfield, NH.  The ice cream (28 flavors) is rich and creamy, and they feature decorated waffle cones with different toppings embedded right into a chocolate dip coating.   The portions are good size and if we're having a sundae or banana split, we can sit outside in good weather, or inside in bad or super hot weather.

There are many exotic flavors, but I like the vanilla or, occasionally, the rum raisin.  If we are eating there (excellent fried clams) I may get a frappe, which is thick, but the only way to
really enjoy real "stand" ice cream is in a cone or dish. The Dipsy Doodle is worth the drive.  It's in Northfield, NH, right off Route 93 at Exit 19.  That's right below Tilton.  We give it a "10".
