Jane and I have a passion for roadside art, especially if it isn't too slick. The big fish above was spotted a while ago in Hampton, Connecticut, but we came upon the motherlode of roadside art about 30 years ago while hunting Roadfood in Summerville, Georgia, where an itinerant preacher named Howard Finster had decided to discontinue his business of repairing and painting lawn mowers and make art instead. We supplied Howard with brushes and material he was unable to get in Summerville and he began to paint up a storm, eventually becoming one of the late 20th century's best-known "outsider artists." Howard was generous in expressing his gratitude for the help we were able to give him, and our one great regret is that we never took him up on his offer for us to supply him with a car -- he suggested a Volkswagen Beetle -- that he would paint and decorate, inside and out! Talk about a great Roadfoodmobile!
