Being an Early Riser

From my experience, there are types of people.  No, not Democrats and Republicans.  I'm thinking about early risers and people who like to sleep in late.  And there is precious little understanding between these two groups.  As an early riser, I tend to think people who sleep late are missing out on the best part of the day.  But when I tell people how much I enjoy getting up in the morning, even on weekends, they look at me like I have two heads.

One of the great things about getting up early, especially when traveling, is going out for breakfast.  There is no better time to relax, read the paper and enjoy some peace and quiet, while fueling up for the busy day ahead.  The fact that you rarely have to deal with crowds is also much appreciated.

Even people who work in restaurants that are open at early hours seem surprised that someone who doesn't have to be up, is awake and out.  Once, while enjoying a huge Jo-Jo Omelet at the counter of Jo-Jo's in the Strip District of Pittsburgh at 4:30AM, my waitress inquired if I was a truck driver.  At Becky's in Portland, ME, I was asked if I was a (commercial) fisherman.  But my favorite took place in a small eatery in Amanda Park, Washington, where the staff wanted to know if I was a lumberjack.  I remember thinking, next time I will have to leave my axe and blue ox in the car!
