Nice Pair at Mr. Mac's Canteen: On the left is a hot dog with mustard, bacon, and sauerkraut.
On the right: mustard and relish. Not shown: French fries.
Kansas has its chicken dinner road and Route 133 out Cape Ann in Massachusetts is a veritable clam boulevard. I nominate Route 25 in Connecticut from the Newtown flagpole into Monroe as my state's Wiener Highway. Driving down to Mr. Mac's Canteen earlier today, I passed the fine Botsford Drive-In, an estranged outpost of Swanky Franks (which I've yet to try), and a for-lease stand that used to sell chili dogs. Further south, at Route 59, is the site of the short-lived branch of Super Duper Weenie. (Notice that I am not mentioning that this route also is home to one of the Northeast's top pizzerias, Carminuccio's). It was the height of lunch hour when I got to Mr. Mac's, the line moved at close-drill speed, and at the counter hot dog service was quite literally instantaneous, the dogs getting dressed, wrapped, and trayed before I was finished saying I wanted French fries and a banana milk shake.
