Peanut butter pie fans unite!…and head to Atlantic, Iowa. Although folks in Cass County have long known the salivary satisfaction that is one of Charlene Johnson’s pies, one pie in particular has now gained national recognition. The folks at Farmers’ Kitchen rolled up their small-town sleeves to take on commercial pie giants such as Bakers Square, Schwan Foods, and Publix Food Markets at the 2009 APC Crisco National Pie Championship in Celebration, Florida. After a long day in the kitchen, Farmers’ Kitchen cinched the coveted first place trophy in the Peanut Butter Division for their Chocolate Peanut Butter Explosion pie. Creamy and decadently rich, Charlene sneaks a thin sheet of fudge in-between thick peanut butter and chocolate cream layers for a dessert that puts all others to shame.
